A Placid Valley

ELENA: Giace in Arcadia una placida valle...

FAUST:...Ivi insieme vivrem...

ELENA: E avrem per nido

le grotte delle ninfe,

e per guanciale...

FAUST: ...Le tue morbide chiome...

ELENA: ...E i fior del prato...

Mefistofele by Arrigo Boito (1842-1918)

I'm from Philly, where that Duchamp piece is actually on display. It's more of an uncanny valley, given the fact that you have to view the life-sized diorama like a peep show through a hole in a wooden door, and the woman's petit chat seems to be grafted on at an anatomically impossible angle.

Frankly, that work has always creeped me out. I'd rather go stare at a urinal.
